Hawaiian Delight Contest

During my senior year of high school I worked part-time as a waitress at Kings Family Restaurant in Pittsburgh, PA. They are well known for their delicious food as well as heavenly ice cream and pies. My favorite was cinnamon ice cream over warm apple pie.  One day our store manager informed the wait staff he had a contest. Whomever could sell the most “Hawaiian Delight” ice cream dessert over the next month would win $100. I decided right then and there that I was going to be the winner. So I informed EVERY customer upon ordering dessert we had the most divine new dessert called the “Hawaiian Delight” and they absolutely had to try it.  I gave them details of the mouthwatering ingredients and told them how incredibly delicious the dessert was. 9 out of 10 customers ordered the “Hawaiian Delight” from me.  The irony here is that I’ve never liked pineapple.  Who won the contest? I did.  Out of about 50 waiters/waitresses, I sold the most “Hawaiian Delight” dessert. I was so excited and proud to win that $100!

Moral of the story: If you are determined to succeed at selling a product or service, you’ll find a way to make it happen. Anyone who wants to be successful in business has to be driven and have goals. You have to be your own biggest cheerleader.  And to this day, I continue to be tenacious, hardworking and believe in myself.
